RULES FOR THE “DRESS LIKE FRIDA”
WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS 2025 CONTEST

CONTEST RULES

1. PARTICIPANTS

The contest is open to anyone from around the world interested in creating a costume using recycled materials inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. There are two categories:

• Ages 6 to 14

• Ages 15 and up

Participants under the age of 18 must send a signed permission letter from their parent or guardian (available alongside this announcement or by request via email). The email address to send the letter is: contact@thefatbrush.com.

2. THEME

Participants must create original costumes and authentic accessories inspired by the traditional styles worn and represented in the works of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera—exclusively using recycled materials.

3. TECHNIQUE

Designs must be made using only recycled materials. Suggested materials include: plastic, paper, bottle caps, buttons, newspaper, wrappers, or any other material that can be creatively repurposed—nothing new.

4. REGISTRATION

The deadline to register is July 10, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. (Pacific Time). Participants may register by emailing: contact@thefatbrush.com or by filling out the form at: www.thefatbrush.com

5. HOW TO PARTICIPATE

​

• Contestants must submit a video no longer than 1.5 minutes introducing themselves, explaining and demonstrating the costume creation process, as well as the final result.

• They must also send two individual photos (from different angles, not collages) of the finished costume.

• Deadline for submissions: July 17, 2025, by 4:00 p.m. (Pacific Time). No exceptions.

Entries will be judged based on:

• Originality and creativity

• Adherence to contest guidelines

• Craftsmanship and detail using recycled materials

• Inspiration from the work and artistic legacy of Frida Kahlo or Diego Rivera

6. JURY

A preselection of entries will be made based on creativity. The jury will then select the winning outfits on the day of the event after reviewing all videos and photographs.
Six winning costumes will be selected: three from each category (children and adults).

7. PRIZES

​

Ages 6 to 14:

• 1st Place: $300 USD

• 2nd Place: $200 USD

• 3rd Place: $100 USD

Ages 15 and up:

• 1st Place: $550 USD

• 2nd Place: $300 USD

• 3rd Place: $200 USD

The jury will select the most authentic costumes and accessories on Friday, July 25, 2025. The winners will be announced at the end of the event, which will be streamed online. Winners will then be contacted within 7 business days to arrange prize delivery.

8. EVENT

The event will be streamed live online on July 25, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. (Seattle time / Pacific Time).
All participants will be able to enjoy a range of pre-recorded content including recycling tips, music, and theater inspired by Frida Kahlo, as well as commentary from the organizers and judges, and the presentation of all videos and photos submitted.

9. PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT
By participating in the “Dress Like Frida” with recycled materials contest, you grant The Fat Brush Art Workshop permission to record and display your design and name on social media and other platforms indefinitely, without further authorization or compensation.
The submitted content will not be used for profit.
The jury will select winners anonymously in both categories, and their decision is final.
